Access to teaching materials
As a student, you will have access to teaching materials through digital platforms and in-person instruction. Different rules apply to copying, usage, and further distribution of these materials. Sharing teaching materials without permission may constitute a legal offence or a breach of contract.
However, through the Kopinor agreement, students and staff are granted a limited right to make photocopies, printouts, and digital copies from published material without having to obtain permission from the rights holders. Students cover their share of this cost through the semester fee.
What does this mean for you as a student?
You should assume that all teaching materials you access at UiO are copyright-protected and provided in accordance with the agreement with Kopinor. Such teaching materials can include book excerpts, lecture recordings, presentations, and compendiums.
As a general rule, you can only use the teaching material for internal copying/sharing and other uses that are natural by virtue of being a student or course participant in the relevant course. This means you cannot share teaching material on open websites or external, closed websites. You also cannot resell the teaching material.
Note that the Kopinor agreement does not apply to audio, film, computer programs, and similar materials. However, some teaching materials may be more freely used and shared. These might be published by the originator under an open license (typically a CC license), or be exempt from copyright protection for other reasons. It is your responsibility to check whether this applies to the specific teaching material.
