Research Support

IFIKK’s research support scheme is based on the distinction between upstream and downstream research activities.

Upstream Research Activities

Upstream research activities are best defined as all research activities that are not downstream. Downstream activities refer specifically to work related to the completion of research projects and the presentation or dissemination of results to peers. Funding for downstream activities is described in detail below.

All other research activities are considered upstream and are expected to be funded primarily through project grants or individual research funds. All permanent academic staff  have access to individual research funds of NOK 15.000 per year.

If no other sources of funding are available for upstream activities—such as archival research or data collection—it is possible to apply to the Department Leadership Group for support. There is no formal deadline or application form, but the proposed activity must be described in sufficient detail, specified, budgeted, and documented.

Regular seminars and similar initiatives receive annual support based on submitted budgets.

Downstream Research Activities

The earlier small-grant scheme and application round for extra research funds have been discontinued. Instead, the new system automatically provides support to permanent academic staff who require funding for downstream research activities, without a formal application review process.

This automatic support applies to conference papers, journal articles, anthology chapters or editorial work, monographs, and shorter-format scholarly books. Papers must be presented at an academic conference, and journals or publishers must be registered in the official list of approved scholarly publication channels (searchable via the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers). Requests for other types of downstream support may be considered by the Head of Department through a strategic funding reserve.

An online form has been developed for permanent academic staff to request downstream support from the department. Use of this form is mandatory. Acceptance of a conference paper, article manuscript, or book contract must be documented before funding is approved.
