Dear colleagues and students,
The summer holidays are fast approaching, and students and staff at the faculty are experiencing hectic days with the end of semester, exams and research deadlines. It has been enjoyable and exciting for us at the Office of the Dean to witness up close the impressive work being done at the faculty and at the university. Congratulations and thank you all for your huge and important efforts! We hope that you can all soon take a well-deserved breather and enjoy the summer.
Work with strategy and annual plan
Among many other things, this spring those of us at the Office of the Dean have worked together with the faculty management team on a strategy for the faculty’s work in the coming years. This will be an overarching strategy and will determine the direction of the work on our annual plan, which will have specific and quantifiable goals for our work at the faculty in the coming years. Our work on the annual plan will commence in mid-August, and all of you are hereby invited to provide input to the annual plan in cooperation with your immediate superior.
Our vision is outstanding knowledge for future health
We have expended a great deal of effort on finding good and concise wording for our vision for the Faculty of Medicine that we all can remember, and the end result was: “Outstanding knowledge for future health”. Our objective is both to generate (through research) and disseminate (through teaching and other forms of communication) outstanding knowledge. Furthermore, we will perform this work in the best interests of both patients and society from a long-term and sustainable perspective - for future health.
Goals for the faculty’s work
The faculty's management team has also discussed what overall goals we should have for our work at the faculty during this period. These goals are as follows:
- Our primary goal for education is to provide outstanding health education for a sustainable society
Our secondary goals are to further develop the study programmes (bachelor's, master's, professional and research programmes) at the faculty in accordance with new knowledge and societal challenges, ensure outstanding medical education and training and contribute to good doctor density nationally, and develop and ensure outstanding study programmes at the faculty which target health and the health service.
- Our primary goal for innovation and research is to facilitate innovation and outstanding, relevant and ground-breaking research
The secondary goals for this work are that the research groups at the faculty shall have good opportunities for development, that research at the faculty shall be relevant to the major societal challenges, and that the faculty shall stimulate innovative and groundbreaking research based on interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Our primary goal for personnel and organisation is to further develop the work and competence of the employees in a flexible organisation
Our secondary goals within this area are that the faculty shall be a unifying, inclusive and sustainable organisation, that the faculty’s work is typified by cooperation, flexibility and adaptability, and that the faculty is an attractive place to work and study.
Your input is welcome
We hereby invite all of you to think about how our vision and primary goals can be translated into items in our annual plan and communicate this to us via your immediate superior. The institute/unit where you are working is now also preparing its annual plans, and we in the management group are collaborating on how we can best take your input into consideration. Please feel free to take some quiet summer work days to think about this!
Apply to become a distinguished educator at UiO
Before the holidays begin, we also encourage employees who teach to consider applying to become a distinguished educator at UiO. The application deadline is 1 September. We want to promote higher quality in our study programmes, and it is a focus for UiO that becoming a distinguished educator should be both financially and professionally advantageous. It is also important to emphasize that education is a collective activity. Therefore, development funds are also allocated to the academic community that the distinguished educator is part of. Read more about the scheme and apply here.
Have a great summer!
We hereby thank you for this very exciting semester at the faculty and for making those of us in the new Office of the Dean feel so welcome. We look forward to working with you in the future, and wish you all a wonderful summer and welcome you back to our important work after the holidays.
Kind regards
Hanne, Jan, Magnus, Grete and Eli
