Editorial: New opportunities with Circle U
Vice Dean Eivind Engebretsen gives an update on the university alliance’s plans for the spring and how MED staff and students can contribute to and take advantage of the opportunities they bring. He would like to get in touch with staff and students who are keen to contribute. A particularly exciting aspect is the 15 new courses and the new master’s programme that we can help to shape. NCMM is recruiting a new head of group!
“NCMM is seeking a distinguished candidate to join our innovative academic community and establish a machine learning research programme. This is a golden opportunity for a young researcher to take the decisive next step in their career,” says NCMM’s Director, Professor Janna Saarela. The position is offered a generous start-up package of EUR 1.8 million during the initial five-year period. NCMM emphasises interdisciplinary collaboration. The head of group position can be combined with an additional position (20%) at a national university hospital, to facilitate translation of results and clinical collaboration. New insight into how to increase innovation from academic research 
Norway has the ambition to build a strong industry within digital life sciences. The report concludes the first phase of the strategic project “A roadmap for academic research-intensive innovation”, which is led by Professor Arnoldo Frigessi (IMB).

Open day at the University of Oslo
Several thousand upper secondary school students stopped by for an open day event last week. The entire Blindern campus was open to upper secondary school students, who were invited to an intensive programme of mini-lectures, stands to visit, speed dates with students and other activities. Stands featuring education in health management and health economics, clinical nutrition and medicine received lots of visitors throughout the day. Circle U: Announcement of postdoctoral Scientia Fellows: This research project is a collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine and Circle U on "collaborative teaching and research" – and looks at the transfer of knowledge between academics, students and non-academic stakeholders. The candidate will have a unique opportunity to work as part of an international environment.

IMB: Alzheimer's leads to changes in small blood vessels in the brain by Cecilie Bakken H?stmark. If the blood supply to your brain diminishes, this can trigger Alzheimer's disease. Researchers at UiO wanted to find out whether we get more or fewer small blood vessels, and what a particular protein has to do with it.
NCMM: Meet Sebastian Waszak: Understanding childhood brain tumours to improve clinical decision-making. NCMM Group Leader Sebastian Waszak and his team are advancing the understanding of childhood brain tumour evolution, exploring new approaches to molecular diagnostics, and utilising knowledge gained from clinical cancer genomics.
Helsam: More nuance in the debate on circumcision of girls and boys in Norwegian by Thea Cecilie Engelsen. A recently published special issue, with postdoctoral fellow Ingvild Bergom Lunde as co-editor, opens up a broader debate on circumcision.
