Increased flexibility provides more opportunities. Five new initiatives will give curiosity-driven research a clear path within the Research Council, from basic research through to social innovation and commercialisation. Delightful FRIPRO awards from the Research Council of Norway!
Congratulations to Harry Thorpe on receiving an early career grant of 6.8 million kroner for research on antibiotic resistance. Congratulations also to Cathrine Rein Carlson, Marit Inngjerdingen, and Valeria Vitelli, who have each received 12 million kroner for their research projects on heart health and gender differences, immunology, and cancer genomics with the help of data. Congratulations also to Ludvig M Sollid, who has received funding for a project at Oslo University Hospital. Read more about the FRIPRO projects on UiO's website (in Norwegian).
Researcher awarded NOK 3 million to develop Alzheimer’s drug from fruits and vegetables.png)
"I aim to discover the connection between the αA-targeted protein and the risk of Alzheimer's," says Shu-qin (Queena) Cao. She has received three million kroner from the National Association for Public Health to research whether a molecule found in fruit and vegetables can be used as a medication against Alzheimer's disease. Life Sciences Conference 2025
During this year's conference, researchers discussed, among other topics, how AI methods are being used to improve dementia diagnosis, robots in the healthcare sector, and how next-generation machine learning can make artificial intelligence more reliable in clinical practice. Our professors Ole Andreassen, Kjetil Taskén, and Arnoldo Frigessi were among the contributing researchers. Read more about this on UiO's website in Norwegian.

UiO: Rector election 2025: Attend the election meetings! Catch one of the last two election meetings. Some of the meetings are streamed. The election takes place between 24 March and 4 April. Voters are to rank the teams when they cast their votes.
- IMB: Construction Work at Domus Medica: Delayed demolition of the patient hotel and closed footbridge.
- UiO: Exercise during working hours: All employees may use 1.5 working hours per week to exercise.
UiO: Looking for a spot in our UiO kindergarten in the fall?1 March is the deadline for applying to the University Kindergartens for year 2025/2026 with start-up in August. If you meet the application criteria, submit an application on the online form. The application form opens 1 February.

UiO:Life Science will fund seven to eight interdisciplinary research projects, some of which are reserved for researchers who will have the Life Science Building as their workplace. Researchers from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. UiO:Life Science will hold workshops for potential applicants in January and February. Se more info below.

IMB: Celebration over large FRIPRO grants to Vitelli and Thorpe (in Norwegian).Valeria Vitelli will combine the use of multiple datasets, statistics, and gene analyses to detect cancer. Harry Thorpe will investigate how plasmids help bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics.
Klinmed: Klinmed receives a good outcome in this year's first FRIPRO allocation (in Norwegian). Researcher Cathrine Rein Carlson and Professor Marit Inngjerdingen each receive 12 million kroner from the Research Council for groundbreaking research projects on gender differences in heart health and NK cells in cancer treatment, respectively.
Apollon/ Klinmed: Small molecule with a big impact: NAD? slows ageing and disease (in Norwegian). The most important molecule for a long and healthy life decreases dramatically as we age. Researchers are now developing medicines to boost its levels again. This is good news – especially for those affected by Alzheimer's.
Scientia Fellows: From fellowship to startup company
