More about DNS at the UiO

Resolving name servers

The name servers above are so-called "resolving" name servers and should be used by the clients. Note that these nameservers are only available to clients who are on UiO's network as a starting point.

Authoritative name servers

In addition, UiO has so-called "authoritative" name servers for our domains. These are name servers that are used by external name servers when they want information about our domains (eg lookup in the zones "uio.no" and "129.240").

These "authoritative" name servers at UiO are: ns1.uio.no and ns2.uio.no.

For redundancy, we also have an agreement with UNINETT for a secondary server in Trondheim for UiO's domains.

Local resolving DNS servers?

Some units at the UiO have their own resolving DNS servers. Such servers are there for historical reasons, and we only allow such for special needs.

Security

Traditionally, many name servers have been used to perform both authoritative lookup for their zones and resolute lookups for their local device. UNINETT recommends that these features be refined and offered from various machines. This means that only the machines that are on networks considered as UiO networks can use our resolving name servers.
