When is it right to use VPN, and what can I use instead?

Not many have the need for VPN services.

  • Do you need access to a program installed on your office machine?  Check if it is available from UiO Programkiosk, or if you can install it on your laptop or home machine.
  • Do you need access to your home directory or disk shares (shared resources) that you have mounted on your office machine? You can not use VPN for mounting remote disks.
    • If the directory/volume is connected to your office computer, you can access it from the UiO Programkiosk or via Remote Desktop
    • If the site is not connected to your office computer, you can in some cases connect directly, using software you install.
  • Do you have a Mac, an iPad, another tablet PC and need to send printouts to printer at UiO? Then you will need to use VPN. Read more about this method for printing.
  • Do you need access to journals from the University library?  Access is granted by logging in with your UiO-username and password. Read more about access to the library resources from remote on UB's website.
  • Do you need to activate a license for an application. For some applications, i.e. F% and Mathlab, you will need VPN.
