Free access for all at UiO
verleaf has been freely available for staff and students at the MN faculty, but other departments have also requested access. Until now, these departments had to purchase individual licenses, but from February 1, all staff and students at UiO will have free access to this practical tool for text production and collaboration. Those who have already paid for licenses for 2025 can contact Overleaf for a refund.

Numerous Inquiries
The IT department handles inquiries about usage and potential software approval at UiO. "We've received many inquiries about using Overleaf over time, and now we've negotiated a good price on a license that allows everyone at UiO to log in directly. The tool is cloud-based, but it is approved for use at UiO by the IT legal team, so you can start using it right away," says Espen Madsen, Senior Engineer in the IT department's division for IT user contact and service center.
"Many have missed collaboration features similar to those in Teams when working on LaTeX documents, and now they can find these in Overleaf. Additionally, Overleaf can be used with the reference tool Zotero, making it easier to write assignments and articles. You also have a continuously updated preview of how the text will look, and you can export it as a PDF with just one click. The IT department is pleased to now offer Overleaf to the entire UiO in collaboration with MN, HF, Medicine, and SV," concludes Madsen.
Useful features
Overleaf is known for simplifying collaborative processes and enhancing efficiency in writing scientific papers, reports, and assignments.
Overleaf provides users with the ability to collaborate in real-time, making teamwork easier than ever. With built-in tools, users can easily share and organize documents and comments, making the editing process both clear and efficient. This is especially useful for groups working on projects that want to maintain a clear overview of progress and changes.
Another valuable feature is the wide selection of templates that provide a good starting point for writing documents that meet various format requirements, whether for conference papers, journal articles, or school assignments. With Overleaf, you don't have to worry about format errors and can spend more time on the content.
You can log in directly
To start using Overleaf now, log in from UiO's Overleaf homepage by clicking on the green "Log in with SSO" button a bit down the page. If it's your first time logging in this way, you'll be asked if you want to link another Overleaf account to your UiO account. If you have another Overleaf account, you will gain access to its content from your UiO account if you choose to link them. Log in with your UiO username (username@uio.no) and password if prompted.
You can find useful tips and templates in the small menu on UiO's Overleaf homepage (see image). Additionally, UiO now has a dedicated IT service page for Overleaf where you can find the login link, guide links, contact information, and more.
