Storing research data
Research data should be stored on a sufficiently secure storage service, with regular backup. You are not allowed to store research data in your home directory (M:) or locally on your computer.
Which storage solution you should choose depends on the sensitivity of your data (see the storage guide for more information), and what other services you might also need access to. If you need to run high performance computing on your data, you should choose a storage solution that can be accessed from your HPC solution (see separate guides for computations, simulations and HPC).
If you are unsure about which storage solution you should choose, we recommend that you talk to your own unit (research group, center, department or faculty), as they may have preferences.
Educloud Research
Storage that is available from anywhere, from any kind of device and that can be shared between project users and project platforms. For UiO projects 1 TB of storage is included, but you can buy more storage space if needed.
Storage hotel
The storage hotel is a cheaper solution for storing larger amounts of data, from 1TB and upwards. It costs 500 NOK per year per TB for UiO projects. From 10 TB and upward it is 400 NOK per TB.
Shared volumes
Shared volumes are storage areas for smaller amounts of data than the storage hotel, and are used by groups of people to store data that is of common interest to the entire group. The cost is covered by your unit (faculty or department).
Services for sensitive data (TSD)
Secure storage of sensitive data. Data is accessible from anywhere in the world. A standard project provides 1 TB of storage, but you can buy more storage space if needed.
UiO OneDrive
Cloud based storage solution with easy access to stored files from Windows or Mac, including Mobile and web. All users get 1 TB as a default, but the limit can be increased (for free) if needed.
UiO Dropbox
Cloud based storage solution with easy access to stored files from anywhere in the world. For researchers and other UiO staff with particular need for Dropbox. Subscription based service, where you pay per year.
NRIS NIRD
Norwegian Research Infrastructure Services (NRIS) is a national collaboration between Uninett/Sigma2 and the four universities NTNU, UiB, UiO and UiT, offering services for computation and data storage for researchers working at Norwegian universities and university colleges. You have to apply for access to these services.
