Only servers where backup had been ordered are backed up. If you are responsible for a server, you should check whether backup has been ordered. Home areas, shared volumes and research storage are already on the list of servers with backup.
- Home directories are backed up every night
- Shared volumes are backed up every night
- Research storage is backed up every night
- Other servers are backed up according to orders. Backup of a server is orderd via e-mail to restore@usit.uio.no
Office computers, local disks, laptops and home computers are not backed up. Users must use OneDrive or shared volumes or other backed up storage to save their files.
How long are backups kept?
- Files on the home directories are backed up daily. A new file will then get a version in the backup system. If the file is changed in relation to what is in the backup system, this means that there is an update in the backup system. The oldest version is deleted at the latest when it is over 90 days since it was backed up. That is, older versions are not available on backup. The last backup of a file will be in the backup system as long as the file is on disk. There are any older versions that are automatically deleted after 90 days. When a file is deleted, the backup version will disappear automatically as it is more than 90 days since the backup version was taken. The last backup version disappears 90 days after the file was deleted.
- Messages located in local mailboxes on the home area follow the procedures that apply to home areas.
Deleted users
- When a user is deleted, the files on the home directory (M :) will be deleted. The files will then automatically disappear from backup after 90 days.
- UiO is only allowed to process (store) personal data as long as the purpose of the processing still exists. When a student or employee quits at UiO, the purpose of processing their data, including personal data, also ceases. This means that these data must be deleted. This follows from the provisions of section 28 of the Personal Data Act.
- For security reasons and for the sake of the data subject, UiO nevertheless chooses to store data related to a person who has quit as a student or in his job at UiO for 90 days from the account was deleted..
- The above information is quality assured by the law officers at USIT.
Other needs
- Those who need longer life on backup can apply for this, if there are grounds for this in laws or regulations.
- S?knad med beskrivelse av behov og grunnlag sendes til backup-core@usit.uio.no.
- Backup ut over standard backup vil bli fakturert.
- Applications can be sent to backup-core@usit.uio.no. Longer storage of backups will be invoiced.
- Applications can be rejected if the formal basis is not satisfied.
Excluded from backup
Some files and areas are excluded from backup at the UiO.
The exclusion looks like this on drives that are backed up and running LINUX and backed up with their own OS agent (not VM backup) and for NAS (HNAS, NetApp, BeeGFS and the like)
**/pc/firefox/Cache/*
**/.local/share/gvfs-metadata/*
**/.cache/
**/.opera/cache/*
**/.*.moved/*
**/$RECYCLE.BIN/*
**/.snapshot
**/[Nn]obackup/

On Windows computers that are backed up with their own OS agent (not VM backup), the exclusion looks like this:
