Google has only opened up for sending instant messages (chat)through Hangouts to people outside of your organization.
Chat and Meet together is the next version of Hangouts. These apps will replace the original version (classic Hangouts) in Google Workplace. We estimate that Hangouts will be phased out starting the first quarter of 2019.

I want to send an instant message (chat)
...to someone I know have a Google Workplace at UiO account
- Go to Chat in the menu.
- On the top left you can browse and find the ones at UiO that you can chat with.
...to someone outside of UiO or others at UiO that does not have a Google Workplace account
You need to use Hangouts for this.
- Go to Hangouts in the menu.
- Start an instant message by clicking Message to any e-mail, assuming they have a Google or Google Workplace account.
- You can also set up a video conferance in your Message by clicking the video symbol.
I want to start a meeting (video/online)
- Go to Meet in the menu.
- Click Start a meeting if you do not already have an existing meeting code.
- If you do not have a code, make one for your meeting. We recommend a six digit unique code.
- Click Join.
- Click the blue dialogue symbol on the top left.
- Invite people will now appear. Click this to invite people directly or copy the meeting link and add it to your meeting request or e-mail.
- You can also invite people outside of UiO, but be aware that a warning will pop up, letting you know that the person you are inviting is not a UiO employee.
- Share your screen by clicking the green screen icon on the top left.
Being invited to a meeting in Google Hangouts
If you have received an invitation to a meeting in Google Hangouts via e-mail, click the Join button in the e-mail. If you are given a choice between what application to open the meeting in, choose Hangouts.
Limitations in browsers
Meet and Hangouts work best in Google's own browser, Chrome.
Setting up Hangouts on mobile devices
Use the Hangouts app (standard in Android) on your Android device.To use Hangouts on an iPhone, download the Hangouts app in AppStore.
