Add and Edit Captions / Subtitles in Panopto

Universal design demands that videos have subtitles. All videos openly accessible in Panopto should now have subtitles.

Since it would be to much work subtitling all lecture videos, we follow the recommendations from the UU (Universal design) Project in spring 2022.

UiO is working together with the other Norwegian universities and university colleges to better the support for Norwegian transcription in Panopto as soon as possible.

Automatic Transcription

Panopto will always transcribe every video uploaded to Panopto. These transcriptions are used to search for words said during a video.

The difference between transcription and subtitles

Though easily intermixed, there arecrucial differences between transcriptions and subtitles.

Transcription

A transcription is a written record of everything conveyed orally in a video. In Panopto, this is done automatically for all videos. The transcription is not visible to viewers if not actively published.

Captions

Captions are found below the video, and can be turned on or off by the viewer. In Panopto the transcription, which is automatically generated, can be used as captions. You can also edit or upload your own subtitles.

Set the Correct Language for Transcriptions

It is important that the correct language is selected for transcribing the recording. If the wrong language is selected the output of the transcription will be nonsense.

If you have set the wrong language you may generate a new transcription with another language.

The first time you set up a new course it is recommended to check that the correct language is set for the course folder. By default it will be Norwegian

  1. Within the Canvas module page Panopto Video click on the cogwheel in the top right corner.

  2. Click on Settings.

Use Automatically Generated Transcriptions as Captions

Transcriptions are by default not published as the quality is not considered good enough. The quality in English is significantly better than on Norwegian.

If you wish to publish the transcription as closed captions you may read how to do so here.

If you publish the transcription it is recommended to to add the following text in the start of the video:
These captions are autogenerated

Upload Captions

If you do not want to use the automatically transcribed captions in Panopto you may upload your own captions. It is also possible to download captions and translate them to another language and make both choices available (e.g. norwegian and english).

You may read how to upload captions to Panopto here.

Edit Captions

If you have captions in the video, either from the transcription done automatically, or captions you have uploaded yourself, there may be typo's you want to correct.

Panopto allows you to edit captions directly within the browser. You can read Panopto's guide on how to edit captions here.
