This page provides important information aimed at students who have been admitted to short-term mobility studies at UiO, in order to prepare for their arrival and course/programme start. If you are interested in applying, see Admission for Erasmus+ students.
1. Find housing
Unfortunately there are currently no available rooms in student housing for exchange students on short-term mobility courses/programmes that are less than 2 months in length.
Therefore you must either book a hotel room for your stay or rent a room in the private rental market.
Renting a room in the private market
- Airbnb (airbnb.no)
- Go to Finn.no - the most popular Norwegian website for housing announcements.
- Go to hybel.no - website for housing announcements mainly presenting shared apartments solutions and smaller studio apartments. Read more about your rights and regulations when renting a flat/studio apartment (in Norwegian).
- Anker Apartments (ankerapartment.no) - private short-term housing rental
- Anker Hostel (ankerhostel.no) - hostel near the city centre
- Haraldsheim Hostel (haraldsheim.no) - hostel approximately 15 minutes from the city centre
- Heimstaden (heimstaden.no) - rental firm
- Recommendations on short-term private rental from UiO's International Staff Mobility Office (ISMO) (uio.no)
2. Travel documents
Residence permit
Since you are studying in Norway for less than three months, you do not need to apply for a residence permit for your studies at UiO.
Visa
EU/EEA citizens do not need a visa to visit Norway, and can stay for up to three months. If you wish to stay longer, you must register with the police.
Non-EU/EEA citizens who do not already have a Schengen visa may need a visitor's visa to visit Norway. Check to see if your country has a visa exemption agreement with Norway (udi.no). If you need a visa to visit Norway, apply for one (udi.no) as soon as you receive admission. Note that certain rules may apply if you travel outside of the Schengen area when you travel to/from Norway.
Applying for a visitor's visa
Students from countries outside the EU/EEA that do not have a visa exemption agreement with Norway (udi.no), must apply for a visitor's visa if they will be in Norway for 90 days or less. Please note that it is neither possible to extend a visitor's visa stay beyond 90 days, nor is it possible to apply for a residence permit while in Norway.
For the visitor's visa application the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) requires an official invitation letter (udi.no) from the University of Oslo as well as a contact person for questions related to your application. Some embassies have their own invitation forms, which you can find in the embassy's checklist (udi.no). Both the invitation letter and the contact person information will be provided for you from the faculty/department at the University of Oslo that is responsible for your course/programme, after you receive admission.
If you have questions about the visitor's visa, your application or the required documents you must contact the embassy, consulate or Visa Application Centre where you are to apply. The University of Oslo cannot provide guidance on your eligibility for a visitor's visa, your visa application or required documents.
Travel insurance
You must have your own travel insurance, health insurance or another type of insurance that covers you while you are in Norway if you become sick or injured. Students from the EU/EEA should bring their European Health Insurance Card.
3. Plan your arrival in Oslo
Make travel arrangements so you arrive in advance of the start of your course/programme. For information about teaching and the exact dates for when your course/programme will begin, please see the course description.
Before arriving in Norway please check out the relevant information in order to prepare for your studies at UiO.
Covid-19 situation in Norway
The travel restrictions upon entry to Norway have been lifted. From 12 February 2022 the same rules as prior to the corona pandemic now apply.
4. Get username and password
Most students will receive a username for the IT services by SMS before the course/programme starts. When you have received your username by SMS, you can set a password for your IT account in Password services.
You can then log in to Canvas and other IT services with your username and password. It is important that you have registered your phone number correctly when you apply to be able to receive the username automatically.
Common mistakes
- Wrong country code
- Wrong area code
- Do not write "0" before your phone number.
- Space between digits
Did not receive an SMS?
If you do not receive the SMS with your username please contact UiO:Helpdesk for assistance. Note that some countries have restrictions for receiving SMS from Norway.
