What must the degree contain?
Examen philosophicum / examen facultatum
- All degrees must contain examen philosophicum (10 credits).
- If a course group of at least 80 credits is in cultural and social science subjects, your degree must also contain examen facultatum (10 credits).
- If a course group of at least 80 credits is in natural science subjects, you will not need to take examen facultatum to achieve the degree.
Course group amounting to at least 80 credits (specialisation)
- The academic specialisation must be in a course group of at least 80 credits.
- The faculty will stipulate requirements for the course groups that can be included. You can not combine your own course group, but must use the compulsory and optional courses that are allowed in the group you choose. View a list of course groups at UiO.
- There are separate requirements for students specialising in clinical nutrition, dental care, dentistry, economics, law, medicine or psychology (cf. the Norwegian version of this web page).
- Older specialisations/course groups that are not listed on the website may occasionally be used as well. For example, if you have taken an intermediate level subject under the former system (90 credits), this may cover the requirement of an 80-credit group.
- The title of the degree will depend on the academic specialisation. It will either be "Bachelor of Arts" or "Bachelor of Science".
Course group amounting to at least 40 credits (support group)
- You can use all 40-credit groups from UiO. Your support group must normally be within another discipline than the one you have specialised in.
- The faculty will stipulate requirements for the course groups that can be included. You can not combine your own course group, but must use the compulsory and optional courses that are allowed in the group you choose. View a list of course groups at UiO.
- If you have taken a foundation level subject under the former system, a one-year programme or the equivalent, this may fulfil the requirement of a 40-credit group.
Elective courses
- The degree may contain up to 40 credits from elective courses. If examen facultatum is not a requirement, the degree may contain up to 50 credits of elective courses.
- If the other components of the degree are larger than required, the requirement regarding elective courses will be reduced accordingly.
Credits required from UiO
At least 60 credits of the degree must have been taken at UiO in order to receive a bachelor's degree from the university. Apart from this, you may apply for recognition of education from other institutions.
Students who have taken their education at several institutions should check the requirements for bachelor's degrees at the other institutions.
If you already have a bachelor's degree from UiO, the new degree must contain at least 60 credits from UiO that have not been used in a previous degree. The new degree must also have a different specialisation than the previous degree. The 60 new credits may be part of the specialisation or be included in a different way.
Digital diplomas
You will receive a digital diploma. You will find the digital diploma as a digitally signed pdf in the document archive in Studentweb. You can also share it with others via Diploma Registry. You log in to Studentweb or the Diploma Registry with ID-porten.
Diploma on paper and address
If you have received a digital diploma, but need to present a diploma on paper, you can order a paper diploma. Contact the information centre at your faculty to order this. Do not order a paper diploma before the need arises.
You can get a paper diploma if you do not have a Norwegian national identity number or D number. and thus can not log in to Studentweb or the Diploma Registry with ID-porten. You can also get a paper diploma if you need to send documentation to foreign educational institutions or employers who do not accept digital diplomas.
Your diploma will be sent to your semester address. Remember to change your address if you move at the end of your studies. You update your address in Studentweb yourself.
Diploma supplement
When you receive a diploma for a degree, you will also be issued an English-language diploma supplement. If you receive a digital diploma, you will also receive a digital diploma supplement.
The diploma supplement follows a European standard and includes a description of the Norwegian educational system.
Students who received a diploma before UiO began enclosing diploma supplements can order one separately.
