On which exams can you submit an appeal?
- You can submit an appeal against the grades for all written examinations.
- You cannot submit an appeal against the grades of oral or practical examinations when the performance is not documented for future purposes.
- On group examinations (two or more students), the participants can submit an appeal individually. Any change in the grade will apply only to the person who appealed.
The result from the appeal process is final and may be the same as, better or worse than the original grade.
Deadline
Three weeks after the grade was published (in Studentweb).
If you have asked for an explanation of your grade, or submitted a complaint based on formal examination errors, the deadline runs from the date you have received the explanation or an answer to your complaint.
Processing time
You will normally receive an answer within one month. If it takes longer, you will be notified. When the result is ready, you will receive an e-mail, and you can see the result in Studentweb.
How to submit an appeal
You submit an appeal in Studentweb. Log in to Studentweb, go to the page "Exam appeals" and follow the instructions there.
How is the appeal processed
The faculty receives the appeal.
Your answer papers are reassessed by two new examiners. At least one of the new examiners is external, i.e. from outside the University of Oslo.
The new examiners have access to your answer papers, the examination question paper and the assessment guidelines. They do not have access to the original grade, the examiners' explanation of the original grade or your explanation of the appeal.
If the new result differs from the original result with two or more grades, UiO will conduct an additional assessment before the final grade is determined.
- In the additional assessment, the examiners are told the original grade and the preliminary result of the appeal, and they will have access to all information about the assessment.
- If you have submitted an explanation of your appeal, the examiners will have access to this now. They will also have access to the examiners' explanation of the original grade.
- The additional assessment is conducted by at least two examiners where both the original commission as well as the appeal commission are represented.
During the appeal process, your grade is restricted in the Studentweb and from appearing on transcripts.
You have the right to withdraw your appeal until the case is settled. If you withdraw the appeal, you will retain the original result.
Explanation of the new grade
You can ask for an explanation of the new grade, but you cannot appeal against the new grade.
The deadline for requesting an explanation is within one week after you were aware of the grade, but still no more than three weeks after the grade was published.
To ask for an explanation of the new grade, you should contact the unit which offers the course. You can find their contact point in the right margin on the course page.
