Resitting an examination

In most courses, you can take the examination up to three times. For master's degree theses, special regulations apply.

Registration

If you have not passed an examination or if you would like to improve your examination result, you can usually register for the next ordinary examination. You register for exams in Studentweb.

If your course has compulsory activities, the course description will show whether you have to follow these again before you can take the exam again.

Examination attempts

In most courses at UiO, you can take the examination up to three times. You can not resit an examination if you have used the maximum number of examination attempts.

A master's thesis that has received the examination result "Fail" may only be resubmitted once as a new examination attempt, and then by the agreed date and in reworked form. A master's thesis that has received the examination result "Pass" cannot be resubmitted in reworked form. This also applies to the final assignments in the professional programmes in psychology and theology and to the project assignment in the professional programme in medicine.

The restriction on the number of examination attempts applies in total for each course. The restriction also applies in the case of new admission to the same or another study programme which incorporates the course.

If you have a strong reason, you can normally apply for an extra examination attempt. Contact the faculty's information centre for more information.

Which grade applies?

If you take the same examination several times, the best grade will apply as the final grade.
