Programme structure

The duration of the Master's programme is two years, and the programme consists of 120 credits.

The Master's programme consists of:

  • Compulsory courses, 40 credits
  • Elective courses, 20 credits
  • Thesis preparation, 30 credits 
  • Master's thesis, 30 credits

Semester abroad at a partner universities or AMS4900 – International Project Term in Asia and the Middle East or KIN4010 – Research Methodologies in China studies and EAST4610 – Voices from East Asia: How to Communicate Research Results and KIN4650 – Research Topics in Chinese Culture and Society II

The first two semesters will provide you with the methodological and theoretical basis for independent work on your master's thesis.

Students should begin to reflect on a topic for their master thesis from day one and all students are provided with a thesis supervisor at the beginning of the second semester.

You can choose 20 credits from the following list of recommended courses:

Elective courses may be offered on an irregular basis. You can find information about which semesters the course will be offered in the course description. 

It is possible to apply for recognition of 20 credits taken in other subjects when these can be seen as relevant for the candidate’s subject area for the dissertation. This must be done in agreement with your supervisor.

Third semester - thesis preparation

Choose one of the following 30 credit options:

  1. Semester abroad at a partner universities (30 credits)
  2. AMS4900 – International Project Term in Asia and the Middle East (30 credits)
  3. KIN4010 – Research Methodologies in China studies (10 credits) and EAST4610 – Voices from East Asia: How to Communicate Research Results (10 credits) and KIN4650 – Research Topics in Chinese Culture and Society II (10 credits)
