Programme structure

Which programme option you take is decided by which courses and research assignment you choose in the Master’s programme. A Master’s thesis in marine biology entails that the courses BIO4301 - Marine benthic ecology and BIO4400 - Marine pelagic ecology are incorporated into the theoretical curriculum. If you are writing your thesis based on limnology, there is no mandatory courses, but all courses are selected together with the supervisor.

The remaining curriculum is chosen in collaboration with your supervisors and it is possible to choose courses provided at all four programme options of the Master's programme in Biology. This means that the academic specialisation decides which course combinations should be chosen.

Example of study plan for students starting in marine biology in the Autumn semester.

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)

You are exempted from these HSE course requirements, if you have already completed the equivalent HSE courses in relation to a bachelor programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at UiO.

Recognition of Master courses from former education

If you are admitted to the Masters Programme and you have completed Master courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Biosciences for more information.
