Career opportunities

A degree in Chemistry opens up job opportunities both in the private sector, research institutions, pharmacy and other industries. Many chemists also work in public administration or teaching. The field of chemistry borders on biotechnology, physics and medicine, so chemists are often central contributors to interdisciplinary projects, for example within climate and environmental research, materials research and biotechnology.

Career opportunities

A master's degree qualifies you for more independent work positions than a bachelor's degree. This makes you more attractive in the job market. Many work tasks and career opportunities will be open to you.

Examples include research and development work in both the private and public sectors, general administrative work and research administration, as well as teaching and other communicative work. In addition to knowledge specific to chemistry, your degree equips you with a significant level of less specific competence.  The ability to work both independently and in a team and to work with scientific material in both Norwegian and English are all skills that are highly valued at the workplace.

Potential employers for qualified candidates include:

  • the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU)
  • the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA)
  • the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI)
  • Oslo University Hospital and other hospitals
  • Statoil
  • Borregaard
  • Norsk Hydro
  • Yara
  • Elkem
  • the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority
  • SINTEF
  • the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE)

Research training

A master's degree can open the way to a career in research through further PhD studies at the University of Oslo or another Norwegian university or a university abroad. A PhD gives you an excellent foundation for carrying out research in private sector companies, at research institutions or at universities. Read more about PhD in Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
