A candidate with a Master’s degree in Classical studies has the following knowledge, skills and competence:
Knowledge
- has advanced knowledge about Greek or Latin language and literature
- has specialized insight into a research question of their own choice within Greek or Latin, which is either linguistically oriented or oriented towards literature, textual criticism, reception history, papyrology, stilistics, rhetorics, cultural or social history
- Has knowledge about methods of textual interpretation and textual constitution
- Masters the terminology of Classical philology and can utilize relevant scholarly literature
- can analyze and reflect critically upon Greek or Latin texts from a linguistic, historical and cultural point of view
Skills
- can define a research question and carry out an academic study within Greek or Latin language or literature
- Can utilize, analyze and evaluate textual commentaries and other relevant secondary literature within Classical scholarship
- can analyze and work with the theories and methods of classical philology and various types of research within classical philology and classical scholarship in a wide sense
- has an independent view on and critical stance towards knowledge and the production of knowledge within classical scholarship
- can reflect critically upon their own writing and writing process and work independently in accordance with the requirements of academic integrity within classical philology
- Can use their knowledge in and about Greek or Latin to contribute to new academic perspectives
General Competence
- Can follow the norms for citing and referencing within classical philology, and can comply with standards of research ethics more generally
- can analyze Greek or Latin source material, and evaluate and discuss both their own scholarly works and the works of others
