Semester abroad
Students in the European History programme have an obligatory exchange of at least one semester as part of their degree, but will be offered the option to spend up to two semesters abroad at one or more of our partner universities. On this page you will find information on when you can go, when and how to apply and information on our partner universities.

When should I go?
It is compulsory for European History students to do at lease one semester abroad. For the second and third semesters, the students choose if they go abroad to study at one of the partner universities or stay at UiO. However, all students who enrol in the Joint Master in European History programme have to stay at least on semester at one of the partner institutions.
Where can you go?
The master's degree in European History is offered by a consortium of twelve universities located in eleven major European capitals.

For the period of mobility
Students are free to choose courses in history at the master’s level at the partner university. You can also request to take courses in related fields in humanities or social sciences. This must be discussed with the home and host university.
In the third semester, students must take HIS4035 – Prosjektutvikling og arbeidsmetodikk i historiefaget, or an equivalent course at a partner institution.
Short time mobility in relation to completion of the master's thesis
Master students at IAKH can apply for funds to cover expenses necessary to complete their master's thesis. Reasons for applying can be support for archive journeys or other trips that are essential for the completion of the master's thesis.
