Semester abroad
We recommend that you spend one (or two) of the semesters, during which you have a few mandatory courses, abroad.
When can I go?
Which semester you should study abroad will depend on the programme option you are following. For most programme options, the preferred semester to go on exchange is the second semester (spring semester). The exchange should be organised in cooperation with your supervisor so you can select courses that are relevant to your master's programme. It may also be possible to work on your master's thesis at one of our partner institutions.
Where can I go?
We recommend the following exchange agreements:
- Université Grenoble Alpes, France
- Université de Strasbourg, France
- ETH Zürich, Switzerland
- Università degli Studi di Catania, Italy
Our students may also have a study stay at The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), which is the world's northernmost institution for higher education and research. UNIS is located in Longyearbyen at 78°N.
Would you like to go somewhere else?
See the complete list of exchange agreements at the Department of Geosciences, the MN-faculty’s list of student exchange agreements, or the university’s exchange agreements. You may also study abroad on your own initiative, independent of any of the University of Oslo’s agreements.
Studies at Svalbard
Students in Geosciences at UiO have the opportunity to take courses at The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). Many students have short or longer study stays at UNIS in the summer, spring, or autumn. The University Centre offers many exciting courses in geosciences. Here, you will also meet an international community with students and researchers from all over the world.

Are you in doubt about going on an exchange?
Read travel letters from geoscience students about their experiences during their exchange stays. The travel letters are in Norwegian:
- En eventyrh?st p? Svalbard
- Hei fra Ottawa, Canada
- Espaaain
- Studiehverdag og ANSA Brasil
- Reisebrev fra Carleton University, Canada
Read more travel letters from other students in the natural sciences on the 'Ut i verden' blog. Most articles and travel letters are in Norwegian.
