Geohazards or 'geofarer' as they are known in Norwegian, include rapid natural processes on or near the Earth's surface, that can threaten both people and assets. Geohazards can be caused by endogenous (internal) processes such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, or exogenous (external) processes, generally triggered by particular weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall leading to floods. In the study, we use calculations, modelling, satellite data and drones. You will choose topics based on your background and interests.
In Norway, the most common geohazards are related to floods and slides, for example, snow avalanches, landslides/debris flows, mudslides (quick clay) and rock avalanches. In recent years, the authorities have greatly increased their focus on these processes.
The Department of Geosciences has a broad research profile on slope stability and the dynamics of mass movements. The department also works closely on issues related to geohazards with other institutions such as The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and Geological Survey of Norway (NGU).
