In this programme option, you build knowledge about the analysis of deformation in the Earth's crust through topics such as geomechanics, tectonics and structural geology. The programme is interdisciplinary and draws on several subject areas.
You learn about the structure of the Earth's crust and how rocks are deformed, by folding and faulting you learn how deformation affects metamorphic processes, how strength properties of rocks change during deformation, and how fault activity gives rise to different types of sedimentary basins.
As deformation of rocks is such a fundamental process within geology, a master's degree in structural geology and tectonics will qualify you for a wide range of jobs after graduation. Examples are careers in the petroleum industry, mining industry, consulting companies and public administration (road and tunnel construction, waste storage, geotechnical engineering and groundwater- and natural hazards management)
The programme option also provides a good foundation for continuing a research education (for a PhD).
