– In my first paper we used the difference-in-difference method which I learned through HEPMA, which is less common in epidemiology but used a lot in health economics, Hasting says.
– Having a perspective from health economics also helps me see the wider picture in my thesis, considering costs and how economics influences behaviour, instead of just focusing on health-related effects, she explains.

I applied soon after finishing my masters and sent my thesis with my application.
To who would you recommend this job/ profession?
If you are self-motivated and really enjoyed writing your thesis and researching in general, a PhD and a career in research would be great for you. You need to have a good grade on your masters thesis and in the courses you take, so this is something to consider from the beginning of your masters.
What do you like best about this profession?
It’s very flexible and you set the pace yourself, and being able to contribute to a really important field (occupational health) is very meaningful. Work is so important in our society so improving the working environment is essential.
What other opportunities are there within the profession?
There are opportunities to do research stays abroad, to travel to conferences, to move forwards and take a postdoc or become a researcher. You can also get into university teaching and become a professor, eventually.
What are the chances of getting a job in this profession?
If you see an advert for a PhD position with a topic you’re really interested in, and you have a good academic record, I think your chances are high.
