Can you tell us about your job?
I am a communication advisor in the The Norwegian Forum for Development and Environment (ForUM), which is a network of more than 50 Norwegian organizations working on development policy, human rights, climate change, environmental issues and peace. At ForUM, the organizations work together to influence Norwegian and international politics in a more just and sustainable direction. As a communications advisor my job, in particular, is to highlight the issues the ForUM community is working on and create public debate through the media, social media and events.
What is the most exciting thing about your job?
It is a great privilege to work on issues such as limiting global warming, protecting human rights and bringing to an end capital flight from developing countries. It is also very exciting to work with talented people from different organizations at ForUM meetings and to learn from each other, develop new policies together and collaborate to make a difference.
How do you use your education at work?
Human geography is a broad and critical discipline characterized by a great social engagement. I take these elements with me to work, every day. When working in civil society you are completely dependent on critical, analytical and strategic thinking. And since ForUM works on a variety of topics I need the broad insight I have gained from my studies which covered everything from global development issues to urban themes.
What is a typical day at work?
My days are very different! This week, for example, I have replied to a journalist who wants tips on things going in the right direction in the world; I have written a script for a campaign movie snippet for a Norwegian action plan for the UN's sustainability goals; I’ve written and sent information letters to ForUM's member organizations; I have scheduled a meeting we will have about the role civic society will play in Norwegian development policy in 2020, and I have shared our analysis of the UN climate negotiations in Madrid. In addition, I need to stay up to date on public debate in both traditional and social media.
How did you get the job?
The reason I got the job was probably that I had a lot of relevant experience. During my studies, I was active in organizations that work with global issues and justice, and I also have work experience from the Norwegian peace movement.
