Teaching and learning Methods

Courses are structured as seminars, with students responsible for preparing assigned readings in advance and participating actively in discussion. Students are expected to develop and pursue research questions individually through mandatory assignments, term papers, and the Master’s thesis.

Compulsory attendance

Some courses may have compulsory attendance. For more information see the course page for each individual course: Courses in Ibsen Studies

Language

Most of our courses are taught in English, but students may submit their written work, including mandatory assignments, examinations and Master’s theses, in Norwegian.

Forms of examination and assessment

The form of examination and assessment varies by course, and may include a semester paper, a three-day take-home examination, or an oral examination. Please consult the individual course page for information about the specific examination form for that course.

Language of examination

The language of examination is either English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.

Grading scale

The program option contains both courses using the pass/fail scale and courses using the grading scale with five steps from A to E for pass and F for fail, cf. § 6.1 i Forskrift om studier og eksamener ved Universitetet i Oslo (Norwegian only).
