Programme structure
The master's programme Informatics: Design, Use, Interaction is a two-year full time study consisting of 120 ECTS credits.
The programme has the following structure:
- Courses, 60 or 90 ECTS credits
- Master's thesis, 60 or 30 ECTS credits
The programme has three different areas within which you can specialize and write a thesis:
- Health Information Systems in Developing Countries
- Large and Complex Information Systems
- Interactional Design

Master's thesis and courses
The choice of courses and the theme of the Master's thesis is done in consultion with your supervisor in the first semester. This choice also determines the specialization you follow.
The Master’s programme is affiliated with four research groups at the Department of Informatics.
How many Master's courses you take depends on whether you are going to write a long or a short Master's thesis. If you choose to write a long Master's thesis, the thesis consists of 60 ECTS credits and you take 60 ECTS credit with courses. A short thesis consist of 30 ECTS credits and you take 90 ECTS credit with courses. At least 30 credits must be from the program structure.
The Master's thesis is an independent research project carried out under supervision that allows you to immerse yourself in a topic of particular interest. You can write a thesis within the various specializations.
The Master's thesis must be presented publicly at the end of the last semester. Following the presentation, an oral examination with the sensors and supervisor will be given regarding the assignment.

Half of the courses you choose must be core courses from the programme. One of these is a mandatory course that all students must take the second semester:
The different specializations also have recommended courses that can be useful for your master's thesis. Note that the different specializations might offer courses that require that you have taken certain courses on bachelor's level.

Progression requirements
The standard study time for the master's programme is two years, or four years if you apply for part-time studies. If you spend more time than two years, it's important that you familiarize yourself with the policies for admission and your right to study. Your right to study may be cancelled if you do not register for the first semester of the study programme and you have absence without valid reason for more than one semester.
Recognition of Master's courses from former education
If you are admitted to the Masters' programme and you have completed Master courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Informatics for more information.
