Programme structure
The programme is a two-year full time study consisting of 120 ECTS credits.
The programme has the following structure:
- Theoretical curriculum, 60 ECTS credits
- Master's thesis, 60 ECTS credits

Theoretical curriculum
The following guidelines apply to the structure of the theoretical curriculum with a total of 60 ECTS credits. During the first week of the semester you will receive guidance in selecting courses:
- at least 40 ECTS credits in Master's courses at 4000/5000 level.
- up to 20 ECTS credits may be in advanced 3000 level bachelor's courses in chemistry, physics or MENA courses.
- up to 10 ECTS credits may be special curriculum or other specialised study as approved by the Programme Council.
Special curriculum may include lecture series, literature, articles etc. that are relevant to the topic of your master's thesis. This may not include literature that you would be expected to study in direct relation to your thesis.
Students starting in autumn 2024 must have a course combination with at least 20 credits of physics (4000-/5000-level) and 10 credits of chemistry (4000-/5000-level) OR at least 20 credits of chemistry (4000-/5000-level) and 10 credits physics (4000/5000 level).

- FYS4310 – Material Science of Semiconductors
- FYS4430 – Condensed Matter Physics II
- FYS4340 – Transmission Electron Microscopy, diffraction and spectroscopy I
Other relevant courses (non-exhaustive list) may be TEK5300 – Renewable Energy: Science and Technology, TEK5310 – Solar Cells and ENERGI4010 – B?rekraftig energiomstilling.
Students who started 2023 or earlier, must select at least one of the following courses:
- FYS-MENA4111 – Quantum Mechanical Modelling of Nano Materials (Autumn semester, English on request)
- MENA5010 – Nanophysics (Spring)
- MENA5020 – Nano-chemistry (Autumn)
The following requirements also apply:
- at least 10 ECTS credits in physics
- at least 10 ECTS credits in chemistry
There are mandatory courses in Health, Safety and Environment, HSE, in the beginning of the first semester:
- HMS0501 - Safety and Physical Environment
- HMS0502 - Positive Learning Environment
- HMS0507 - Fire Safety
- HMS0503 - Laboratory safety
- HMS0505 – Electrical Safety
HSE-courses do not give credits. If you have previously passed equivalent courses at the University of Oslo, you will not need to re-apply these.

Master's thesis
The Master's thesis is an independent scientific research project conducted in connection with research at the Department of Chemistry or the Department of Physics. The thesis, of 60 ECTS credits, is conducted under the supervision of a member of the academic staff at one of the departments or at the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology. You will usually choose the topic of your thesis and find a supervisor during the first semester. It is also possible to plan an external research project, but your primary supervisor must be based at one of the University departments.
Honours certificate
Are you academically ambitious? It is possible to supplement your master's degree with an honours certificate worth 20 credits. You take the certificate concurrently with the master's programme.
Recognition of Master's courses from former education
If you are admitted to the Master's programme and you have completed Master's courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Chemistry for more information.
Diploma and degree
This programme leads to the following degree: Master of Science in Materials Science for Energy and Nanotechnology
