Compulsory courses and study abroad
The courses in the first and second semester (MEVIT4700 - Screen Histories and Theories, MEVIT4701 - Screen Technologies and MEVIT4702 - Screen Aesthetics) are compulsory. The third semester could alternatively be used for international student exchange, provided that students take relevant courses (for instance similar to MEVIT4703 - Screen Politics) abroad. The department will provide recommendations for the students wishing to explore this opportunity. The master supervision will continue also while the student is abroad.
Elective course
In your third semester, you must take an elective master's course. This course should normally be chosen from the portfolio of master's courses at the Department of Media and Communication.
Screen Cultures also offers an opportunity to take an internship course as your elective course in your third semester:
MEVIT4704 – Screen Cultures Internship-Course
You can also apply to take a master's course at another department at the University of Oslo. This should normally be because the course has a connection with the topic of your Master's thesis. You need your supervisors recommendation to apply for this, and IMK can not guarantee admission, as this is up to the department that offers the course.
The master's thesis
The master’s thesis is an independent research project. All students will be assigned a group supervisor at the beginning of the program and an individual supervisor at the end of your second semester.
As a student on the Screen Cultures Master' s program, you will take the Master's thesis course: MEVIT4790 – Master’s Thesis in Screen Cultures, with presentation (60 ECTS)
Please make yourself familiar with general information about the master's thesis at the Department of Media and Communication.

The diploma is issued when you have completed the courses that meet the requirements for a degree. Read more about diplomas.
