The programme has two programme options

Courses

The two programme options have compulsory courses that ought to be taken early in the programme. The remaining courses are chosen among master's courses in mathematics, statistics and informatics. See each programme option for recommended study plans and information about suitable courses.

Master's thesis

In the first semester of the master’s programme you take courses that will give you a foundation for further specialization towards your master’s thesis. After this, the study plans vary depending on whether you will be doing a long or a short master's thesis:

  • A long master's thesis is 60 ECTS credits. In addition you take master's courses corresponding to 60 ECTS credits. The work on the master's thesis is normally performed over the last three semesters, with a workload of 10 ECTS credits in the second semester, 20 ECTS credits in the third semester and 30 ECTS credits in the fourth semester.
  • A short master's thesis is 30 ECTS credits. In addition you take master's courses corresponding to 90 ECTS credits. All the work on the master's thesis is done in the fourth semester. The thesis topic is set in discussion with your supervisor during the third semester.

Honours certificate

Are you academically ambitious? It is possible to supplement your master's degree with an honours certificate worth 20 credits. You take the certificate concurrently with the master's programme.

Recognition of Master's courses from former education

If you are admitted to the Master's programme and you have completed Master's courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Mathematics for more information.

Diploma and degree

The diploma is issued when you have completed the courses that meet the requirements for a degree. Read more about diplomas.
