Mastering Research Proposals: Excellence, Impact, and Implementation for Norwegian Research Council Applications" - workshop

Target Audience: Young researchers or researchers at HELSAM inexperienced with external funding.

Objective: Equip participants with the knowledge and skills to develop competitive proposals for external funding.

Duration: 4 hours (10:00–14:00) including a 30-minute lunch break, food will be provided for all participants)

Workshop structure: 

10:00–10:10: Welcome and Introduction by Ivan Dragicevic, section manager

  • Purpose of the workshop
  • Overview of the three thematic areas: Excellence, Impact, Implementation
  • Expected outcomes

10:10–11:30 Session 1: Excellence by Ivan Dragicevic, section manager

Objective: Understand the importance of excellence in research proposals, focusing on quality, novelty, and methodology.

Presentation (10:10–10:40): 

  • State of the Art: Importance of situating the research in the current landscape. 
  • Knowledge Needs & Objectives: Identifying gaps and defining clear project goals.
  • Research Questions, Methodology, and Ethical Issues: Developing hypotheses, using appropriate methods, and addressing ethical considerations.
  • Novelty and Ambition: Demonstrating originality and advancing the field.

Group Activity (10:40–11:00):

  • Participants will be divided into small groups. Each group will receive a small research challenge. Task: Identify at least two knowledge gaps, propose at least two objectives, and suggest a most appropriate methodological approach.

Discussion and Feedback (11:00–11:30):

  • Groups present their outputs, followed by facilitator feedback.

11:30–12:00 Lunch break

A simple lunch will be served to all participants

12:00–12:50 Session 2: Impact by Sissel Aastorp, senior research advisor

Objective: : Learn how to articulate the societal, industrial, and academic impact of research projects.

Presentation (12:00–12:25):

  • Potential Impact: Addressing societal and industrial challenges, contributions to UN SDGs, and ensuring reproducibility.
  • Communication and Exploitation: Identifying stakeholders, planning dissemination activities, and fostering engagement.

Group Activity (12:25–12:50):

  • Each group develops an impact statement for a given project idea, identifying key stakeholders and proposing communication strategies.

12:50–13:50 Session 3: Implementation by Vibeke Christie, senior research advisor

Objective: Develop practical plans for team management, task allocation, and project organisation.

Presentation (12:50–13:20):

  • Project Manager & Team: Highlighting expertise and complementarity in the right way 
  • Work Plans: Creating Gantt charts and visual task representations.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Justifying involvement and defining roles.

Individual Task (13:20–13:40): 

  • Participants draft a basic project organisation plan for a mock research project, including team roles and work packages.

Discussion (13:40–13:50):

  • Facilitators review selected plans and provide feedback.

13:50–14:00 Wrap-Up and Q&A

  • Recap of key takeaways.

  • Open floor for questions.

  • Share additional resources and contact information for follow-up support.
