Budhi Surya obtained in August 2001 his Ir/Ingenieur (MSc.) degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Twente and his Ph.D. in the same field, with a thesis on optimal stopping of Levy process, from the University of Utrecht in January 2007. Soon after he joined Bank of America Corp. as a quantitative financial analyst at AVP level, based mainly in Singapore with direct reporting line to the BOA head office in Charlotte, North Carolina in the US. He has been a senior lecturer in statistics at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand since February 2015. He was a visiting scholar to the Mathematical Institute of Goethe University of Frankfurt under DAAD scholarship, to the Mathematical Institute of Copenhagen University, the Mathematical Institute of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, to the Department of Statistics of London School of Economics, Columbia University Department of IEOR, NYU Stern Department of Statistics in September 2019 and April-May 2025.
His researches are predominantly on optimal stopping of Levy process in actuarial science and mathematical finance, estimation of Markov processes and their mixture models in survival analysis, stochastic optimal control, Bayesian filtering and smoothing.
