General guidelines for mandatory assignments
A compulsory assignment is an assignment that must be completed and approved in order for the student to be eligible for exam in a course. The number of compulsory assignments given in a given course must be stated on the semester webpage at the start of the semester. The course webpage must also contain information about whether a compulsory assignment is to be assessed as passed/failed or given a letter grade, and/or whether it will count towards the final grade in the course.
Handing in mandatory assignments
The assignment must be submitted within the deadline specified by the course leaders. Assignments will not be accepted after the deadline, with the exception of postponements as described under the points "Illness" and "Other reasons for postponement" below.
Reuse of compulsory assignments
Compulsory assignments are valid for up to 5 years, for students who have all their compulsory assignments approved in a course. For students who have parts of the compulsory assignments approved in a course, then the assignments are valid for up to 2 years. The course leaders decides whether the validity will be shorter than the specified 2 or 5 years. It is the student's task to prove that a compulsory assignment has been previously approved by showing an e-mail receipt or a saved screenshot
Please take note that AST2000 is exempt from the rules mentioned above.
Cooperation
In the case of individual submissions, particular attention must be paid to:
? All aids are permitted to use.
? It is permissible to collaborate, but you must formulate and write by yourself, and it must reflect your understanding of the material. Note that collaboration is not permitted in all mandatory submissions. The information about collaboration must either be on the course page, or clarified with the course leader.
? If you include text, illustrations, program code and other things that others have created, then you must clearly label it and indicate where it was taken from.
? It is permissible to get hints about how an assignment can be solved, but this should be used as a basis for your own solution and not copied in unchanged.
If you are in doubt as to what constitutes legal collaboration, please contact the course leader of the teaching assistant.
Quotes and sources in assignment hand ins
IMPORTANT: As a student you are required to familiarize yourself with the rules for usage of quotes and sources, and the regulations about cheating.
In any type of hand in it is important that it is obvious what is your own work. You must specify who you have cooperated with. If you have cooperated with others, used other’s opinions, ideas, interpretations, literature, internet sources or other sources in your hand in, then you must always accurately note where you have found the information. Read more about how to refer to sources at the university library.
Openness and is foundational for all academic work. Presenting others’ work as one’s own is considered plagiarism, cheating or a cheating attempt. Read more about cheating at the University of Oslo.
Illness
Students must submit a medical certificate if there is a need for postponement due to illness, and this must be done before the submission deadline. Please contact studieinfo@astro.uio.no about sick leave, and notify the course leader that the sick leave will be sent to the study administration.
Other reasons for postponement
