Course content

This will be a core unit, addressed by several staff with experience in tackling multi- and interdisciplinary research methodologies. Interdisciplinary research plays a critical role in virtually every field of study in the sciences, arts and humanities. The aim of this course is to explore the ways in which interdisciplinary studies are defined, how they formulate particular research problems, and what kinds of research tools and methods are applicable. The course surveys such diverse fields as political science, sociology, geography, anthropology, literature, history, economics, landscape studies, architecture and the natural sciences in order to present the palette of tools available to the student.

Learning outcome

To introduce students to the complexities of interdisciplinary research
To develop students’ skills in, and knowledge of, philosophical argumentation, historical processes and cultural understanding of environmental problems
To use the ongoing case studies provided by SUM researchers to provide practical training to those who may go on to careers in research and policy areas

Formal prerequisite knowledge

This course is an essential and compulsory course in the Master's programme Culture Environment and Sustainability (CES), and is therefore primarily reserved for students who are admitted to this programme.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
