SUM4910 – Internship
Course content
The course offers DECC-students the opportunity to undertake an internship and to use academic knowledge, skills and compentence in a relevant work situation. The host institution could be a relevant NGO, research institution, private company, or ministry/directorate, in Norway or abroad.
Examples of tasks:
- collect, analyse and/or present data and information
- prepare meetings
- organize events
- communication work
- administrative tasks
The scope of the work must be equvalent to 6 weeks full-time work. In order to receive credit points for the internship, the student has to submit an academic course paper after the internship period. One day a week should be spent working on the paper. The students shall receive no remuneration for the work or from the institution during the internship period.
SUM has limited administrative capacity to initiate contact between students and relevant institutions. Students must therefore explore internship options themselves.
Learning outcome
When completing the course you will have:

Admission to the course
The course is restricted to students enrolled in the Development, Environment and Cultural Change master’s programme.
Students will not able to register for the course in StudentWeb. The Study coordinator will do the registrations once an internship agreement is signed by the student and the host institution.
SUM/DECC has limited administrative capacity to initiate contact between students and relevant institutions. Students must therefore explore internship options themselves, but the institution must be approved by SUM before you contact them.
The student is responsible for ensuring that the contract is signed by all parties before they can start the internship.
Students going abroad are responsible to arrange visas/work permits and insurance for themselves.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
SUM4100 – Research Methods and Project Design and SUM4200 – Advanced Introduction to Development and Environment
Teaching
The student should participate in the daily activities at the host institution for 30 days, preferably full-time during a 6-week period, or alternatively part-time throughout the semester. The student must have a contact person at the host institution as well as a supervisor at SUM.?
Examination
In order to pass the course you must submit a course paper. The length of the paper should be 10 standard pages (2300 characters without spacing).
SUM, the individual student, and the external client must decide in mutual consultation what the topic of the course paper should be. The paper must be written according to academic standards expected at masterlevel. SUM has the academic responsibility for the term paper, and the academic follow-up from a supervisor.
Sumission deadline is usually one week after the end of the internship period, but that depends wether it is a full time or part time internship. The Study coordinator will set the deadline when the internship agreement has been signed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
