IBS4020 – Methods and Theory in Ibsen Studies
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
This course is obligatory for students taking the Ibsen Studies Programme at Master’s Degree level.
The course comprises three main disciplines:
(1) Theory and Methods in relation to scientific work on Ibsen: literary and dramatic theory, aesthetics and history,
(2) fundamental problems of text criticism and the relationship between basic text and translations, and
(3) research ethics. A standard syllabus has been produced, and this will be found on the course page for each semester.
Learning outcome
Students are expected to acquire a fundamental knowledge and understanding of research conditions within the science of literature and drama, including research conventions and ideals, and thus to be able to prepare their own work on course assignments and their Master’s Degree dissertation.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent qualification
Recommended previous knowledge
A fundamental knowledge of Ibsen’s literary production.
Teaching
Concentrated seminar in the latter part of the autumn semester, with a total of 7 double periods. Attendance is compulsory, and students cannot be absent on more than 2 of the 7 occasions.
Exemption from obligatory attendance is granted only where a written application is made and satisfactory grounds are given
Examination
Each student writes an assignment prescribed in connection with the teaching. The assignment shall be 5 pages in length (approx. 10,000 characters). The assignment is assessed by the subject teacher. Mark: pass/fail.

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
