IBS4390 – Master's Thesis in Ibsen Studies

Course content

Master’s thesis in Ibsen Studies is a systematic scholarly study on a topic that is related to Ibsen and his works. The student works independently on the research project with supervision from a teacher. The student is also invited to group supervision sessions with other master’s students where they give each other feedback and receive feedback from other faculty members in the program.

Learning outcome

With supervision, the student should be able to

  • Develop systematic, source-critical and problem-oriented original research questions.
  • Discuss advanced concepts, theories and methods relevant to the chosen topic.
  • Position one’s own work intellectually by comparing and questioning the existing body of scholarship.
  • Write advanced scholarly prose and construct well-formulated arguments.

Admission to the course

A fundamental knowledge of Ibsen’s literary production. Students are encouraged to start working on the thesis as soon as possible in their course of studies.

Teaching

A thesis with a topic formulated by the student is to be written under up to 18 hours of supervision throughout the process.

In order to be assigned a supervisor, students must agree to and sign a?supervision agreement?for masters students enrolled in the Department.?

Examination

The master`s thesis should be submitted during the last semester after all other courses have been completed.?The maximum length of the 60 credit Master`s Thesis is 100 pages (approx. 2 300 characters per page, not including spaces).??

The master`s thesis may be written in English or Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. The thesis is assessed and graded by a subject teacher and an external examiner.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

A master’s thesis that is not passed may be resubmitted only once, and then within the agreed time and in revised form. A master’s thesis that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.

If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
