FIL2208 – Major - Theory of cognition/Philosophy of science

Course content

The course discusses selected problems within the field of epistemology and philosophy of science. The most important contributions in the field are interpreted and compared.

The exact topic of the course may vary from one semester to another.

Learning outcome

After having completed the course you should be able to:

  • document an in depth knowledge of problems related to the field of epistemology and philosophy of science, as well as to discuss different point of views in writing
  • give a precise and argumentative oral presentation that discusses a central problem within epistemology and philosophy of science
  • demonstrate a knowledge of differences, similarities and connections between different point of views within epistemology and philosophy of science and also to evaluate in a critical manor different point of views within the areas of specialisation

Overlapping courses

FIL2008 overlaps with FIL4200 and FIL4220 from spring 2017.

Teaching

24 hours of seminars and lectures. The teaching will take place together with MA-students from FIL4200

Active participation and regular attendance is expected.

The course has the following compulsory tuition activities:

  • 10 short, weekly excercises of about half a page each of which you must submit at least 6

The compulsory tuition activities must be accepted as satisfactory in order to be able to submit the exam. The activities are closely linked to the teaching, and are therefore only valid the semester they are completed.

Examination

A portfolio exam that consists of two parts; two essays of 5 pages each which you submit in Inspera. The portfolio will be graded as a whole.

You are entitled to supervision provided you hand in a draft of each essay.

Evaluation criteria fall 2018.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
