GRE2316 ¨C Greek Choral Lyric

Course content

Greek choral lyric encompasses a multiplicity of various genres, including the more familiar (epinikion, Attic dramatic forms) and those that only survive in fragments (dithyramb, paian, epithalamium). At the end of the Archaic period, choral lyric was a domain of active experimentation.

In this course, we will read approximately 65-70 pages* of Greek text, depending on the level of complexity of the given author. In addition you are expected to read supplementary literature for orientation and/or in-depth-study.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of this course you will:

• Be able to translate the texts on the curriculum
• Be able to analyze some of the more frequent meters used in choral lyric
• Be familiar with Greek literary history of the 5th c. BCE
• Be able to competently identify some of the formal peculiarities of the various kinds of Greek choral lyric

• GRE1405 ¨C Gresk lyrikk (discontinued)

• 10 credits overlap with GRE4316 ¨C Archaic Greek Poetry (discontinued).
• 5 credits overlap with GRE2410 ¨C Greek Lyrical Poetry.

Teaching

The teaching is given as seminars thoughout the semester (10 double sessions). The teaching is common with GRE4316 ¨C Archaic Greek Poetry (discontinued).

In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, the following compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher:

• draft of the seminar paper. You submit your draft in Canvas.

Examination

Seminar paper (5-7 pages of 2300 characters each; spaces, title page and list of references not included). You choose one topic from a list of given topics.

When you write a seminar paper, you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. The obligatory draft of the seminar paper forms the basis for this tutoring. An exact deadline for handing in the draft will be given by the teacher during the seminar.

In order for you to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
