LAT2105 – Latin Grammar II

Course content
The course offers a thorough examination of Latin syntax, focusing on complex sentences, and experience in translating from Latin to Norwegian and/or English and vice versa. We read excerpts from classic prose, particularly focusing on grammatical issues.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- read and interpret Latin texts on an advanced level
- account for the most important syntactic constructions in Latin
- translate complex sentences from Norwegian to Latin, using a wide range of syntactic constructions.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
LAT1001 – Innf?ring i latin I, LAT1002 – Innf?ring i latin II and LAT1105 – Latinsk grammatikk, or equvalent.
Overlapping courses
- 5 credits overlap with LAT2103
- 5 credits overlap with LAT2104 – Oversettelse til latin II (discontinued)
Teaching
Spring 2021: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the teaching may be wholly or partially digital on this course. You will be notified of all changes.
Seminar stretching through the whole of the semester(14 weeks) with a three hour session every week. There are weekly hand-ins, and we expect you to meet prepared and participate actively in the classes.
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, the following compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher:
- Obligatory test, ca. halfway through the semester.

Examination
Four hour final, written exam. NB: In Spring 2021 the examination will be a digital home examination (4 hours).
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, the compulsory assignment must be approved by the teacher.
Digital home examination
The home examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera.You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Examination support material
You may use one of the following dictionaries:
- Roggen, Vibeke, Kraggerud, Egil og Tosterud, Bj?rg: Latinsk ordbok, Oslo 2015. Without the grammar appendix. The department has dictionaries without grammar appendix for loan.
- Johanssen, Jan, Nygaard, Marius og Schreiner, Emil: Latinsk ordbok, 4. reviderte utgave ved Egil Kraggerud og Bj?rg Tosterud, Oslo 1998. (or previous editions)
In addition you may bring:
- Kj?r, Ove. Dansk-latinsk ordbog. 2. utgave, K?benhavn 1997. (or previous editions)
Do you wish to use another dictionary?
Other dictionaries than the above mentioned, may be approved through application. Contact the exam adviser two weeks prior to the exam, at the latest, and bring the dictionary you wish to use. If we approve the dictionary in question, you will get a written permit that you must bring to the exam venue on the examination day.
Dictionaries with grammar sections are not allowed. Dictionaries may neither contain notes, Ordb?ker kan heller ikke inneholde notater, paper pieces, etc. This will be controlled at the exam venue. Dictionaries with grammar sections, notes, pieces of paper, etc. will be withdrawn immediately, and a case of academic misconduct will be initiated.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
