LAT4405 ¨C Latin Research Seminar I

Course content

The subject provides students with an opportunity to participate in ongoing research within Latin language or literature studies. The students read a selection of texts in the original language (approximately 100 pages, depending on the level of difficulty), as well as secondary literature related to ongoing research. The subject may include the opportunity to contribute to relevant databases or other research publications or participate in scholarly workshops or conferences. Through this subject, students gain hands-on experience in research and can contribute to knowledge development in the academic community.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you will be able to:

• discuss ongoing research in Latin language or literature studies and assess the various research perspectives and approaches in the field.
• independently do research-related work in a scholarly project, including data collection, analysis, and reporting findings.
• formulate research questions relevant to current topics in Latin language or literature studies and evaluate the various methodological alternatives available to address them.

Admission to the course

To be admitted to this course, you must be enrolled in Classical Studies (master's two years). Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Specialization (80 ECTS credits) in Latin at the Bachelor's level.

Teaching

Minimum 10 two-hour seminars during the semester. In addition comes attendance in relevant workshops/conferences, if any such workshops/conferences take place during the semester.

We expect you to prepare for the seminars.

NB: If no more than two students sign up for the course, the teaching may be given as guided reading.?

In order for you to be allowed to sit for the final examination,?the following compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher:

• Oral presentation
• Attendance: You must attend at least 7 of the 10 seminars.

Approved tuition activity is valid also for the next two semesters in which the course is offered.

Examination

Seminar paper of a total of 10-15 pages, 2300 characters each (without spaces; title page and reference list not included).

In order for you to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.

Examination support material

You are required to?familiarize yourself with the rules for sources and citations. It may be considered cheating or attempted cheating to use other people's material without informing about it.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.?Read more about the grading system.
