LAT4407 – Seneca
Course description
Course content
We will read 60-75 pages drawn from Seneca’s works, supplemented by secondary literature intended for orientation or advanced study. By a broad exposure to secondary literature the student will obtain an insight both into interpretation of works that we will read and into the history of their scholarly and artistic reception. The proportion between primary and secondary literature can vary depending on the thematic angle of the course.
Learning outcome
After you have completed this course, you will be able to:
- translate the texts included in the syllabus from Latin into English and interpret them.
- explain grammatical, as well as rhetorical and stylistic features in these texts.
- place these works in their own historical context and comment on their reception.
- discuss individual passages attending to their textual-critical, linguistic, stylistic, literary, historical, or cultural aspects.
- formulate and justify research questions related to the interpretation and/or reception of the texts studied in the course.
Admission

You must be admitted to Classical Studies (master) to sign up for this course. Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
Specialization (80 ECTS credits) in Latin.

Teaching

- 10 double hours of instruction jointly with LAT2407 – Seneca (discontinued)
To be able to take the exam you must have completed successfully the following compulsory activities:
- attendance (minimum 10 out of 14 seminars). NB: Due to the Corona-situation attendance will not be compulsory in spring 2021.
- submission of a draft of the term paper (minimum 2-3 pages, ca. 2300 characters) in Canvas.

The obligatory activities are linked to the exam and only valid during the current semester.
Examination
Term paper (10 pages, 2 300 characters), including footnotes and references. The topic is chosen in consultation with the instructor.
When you work on the term paper, you are entitled to be supervised individually by the instructor. The obligatory draft of the term paper, which provides the basis for supervision, must satisfy certain minimum requirements to be approved. Information on supervision and submission of the draft will be provided by the instructor in the course of the semester.
In order for you to sit for the examination, all compulsory activities must be approved.

Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
