CAR3900 – Practice semester career: Asia

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

The course is integral to the one-year programme career:Asia for students of Japanese or Hindi and is mandatory in the second semester.

You will be engaged in a company in Japan or India. You will not be paid, but you will be given assignments that will enable you to practice what you have learnt so far – during your BA and in the first semester of career:Asia.

The engagement lasts four months, from January to May (India) and February to June (Japan). Occasionally the engagement may last up to two weeks longer depending on the nature of the assignments.

The assignments will be defined by the company, following general framework given by the University of Oslo. The framework suggests the assignment should be meaningful and interesting, enable the student to experience real life work culture, encourage the student to use his knowledge and competencies, facilitate inclusion in teamwork, and be a positive experience.

You will be asked to write an essay based on your work experience, on a topic decided upon in collaboration with your supervisor. It should refer to readings from the BA courses and the first career:Asia courses. The essay should as far as possible be tied to concrete issues, and the discussion should be focused on topics or events relevant to their experience with the company.

Your report should focus on what you have been doing for the company, drawing both on personal experiences, reports, feedback and result from that real-life work situation. Although we like you to include a business perspective, it is also advisable to make use of your knowledge of Japanese language and society, and as far as possible to link to related academic concepts and literature.

Important criteria in the evaluation of your paper are methodological reflection and analytical clarity.

You should as far as possible ensure that you avoid English in everyday conversations so that you really learn the language you studied. Your learning outcome here will depend on your own effort.

Learning outcome

The second semester will give you:

  • solid real work life experience
  • advanced language skills
  • branch knowledge

The combination of management studies coursework from the first semester and the real life work experience and language practice in this is a unique combination. This experience from working in an Asian setting will enhance your knowledge and understanding of Asian work life, society and language. It will vastly improve your ability to work in an Asian context and to function as a communicator across languages and cultures.
