KULH1404 – Legends and Fairy-Tales
Course description
Course content
The course is designed to give students knowledge of Norwegian history and society, especially by examining the role of folklore in the process of nation-building during the nineteenth century. Furthermore, the course gives an introduction to verbal folklore; its content, form and function. The empirical emphasis will be on Norwegian and Sami legends and folktales. Stories from current and pre-modern society will be presented and analyzed through a variety of perspectives. The aim is to enable the student to understand the connection between the stories that are told, and the values, norms and practices of culture.
Learning outcome
The students will acquire skills in understanding and analyzing culture, and the course is especially suited for new students of Scandinavian Studies or Culture Studies.

Teaching
The course is based on a mix of lectures and seminars that expects and requires active student participation (written and verbal assignments) and advance preparation for the seminars. An excursion to The Folk-Museum and viewing of films based on legends and fairy tales are also included.

Examination
Students will submit 1 minor assignment (4 pages)during the course, in English. The paper must be approved by the course teacher before the student is allowed to take the final exam. At the end of the semester there will be a 4 hour written exam which will be graded according to the ECTS - system: using grades A-F, where A equals excellence and F equals failed.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

An external examiner regularly evaluates the academic quality of the course, including the form of exam used on the course.
