Learning outcome
- Deeper understanding of the relationship between religion and society
- Practical training in comparing the study of religion in a cross-cultural, global perspective
- Understanding of religious complexity and processes of change in past and present times
- Knowledge about analytical tools to study interfaith relationships, multireligious societies, and diversity within religions
- Overview of methods and theories that are used in research about religion today
- Insight into a selection of in-depth studies from the research environment
- Knowledge about religious traditions outside of the "world religions" and the relationship between them
- Reflection about methodological challenges related to different forms of source material
- Training in independent and critical participation in discussions concerning the study of religion
- Training in analysing issues related to the relationship between the individual and society, and topics such as body, power, and magic
- General learning outcomes: Essay writing is an integral part of the course, so is training in text analysis and fieldwork methodology.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Registered MA-student.
Teaching
Spring 2021: This course offers digital teaching throughout the semester. The seminars can happen on campus if the current regulations are changed, but these will also be offered in a hybrid version
There will not be a requirement for compulsory attendance for teaching in the spring of 2021, but we strongly recommend that you follow all the teaching.
Teaching is given in the form of academic supervision. You will receive more information from the course teacher at the start of the semester.
Compulsory activity:
- You will have to submit a first draft of the term paper halfway through the semester in order to qualify for the final examination.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Term paper, 8 - 10 pages. Detailed information on the term paper will be given by the course teacher and published in Canvas in early January.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
