NFI1320E – Old Norse Literature 1
Course content
An elementary overview and review of Old Norse literature based on translated texts. A general outline of Norse literary history will be given and examples of saga literature, didactic literature and a poem from the Poetic Edda will be studied.

Learning outcome
You will acquire a general overview of Norse literature and literary activity on Iceland and in Norway during the Middle Ages, and will become familiar with the main literary streams in the saga debate from the 19th century up to the present day.

It is not possible to take this course as a private candidate. Only students who have been admitted to the course may participate in the course and sit the examination.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
No obligatory previous knowledge beyond higher education entrance qualification is required.
Teaching
The course will consist of one two-hour seminar per week over 15 weeks, including study weeks. One qualification assignment must be approved by the course teacher before students may be entered for the exam.
Tuition will be given throughout the semester, in accordance to Section 4.1 in the Regulations governing Studies and Examinations at the University of Oslo
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
The exam is an oral examination at the end of the semester.

Language of examination
The language of examination is generally English. It is also possible to submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
