ENG1111 – The English Language. Awareness and Writing Skills, an introduction

Course content

The course gives an introduction to:

  • practical English grammar, including some knowledge of the terminology used to talk about language
  • special features of different genres, both literary and non-literary
  • linguistic concepts that are useful in the study of English literature
  • vocabulary expansion and resources for this

The aim is to improve the students' writing skills in English.

Learning outcome

After completing this course you will have:

  • learned the basics of English grammar and grammar-related terminology
  • developed skills to understand, describe and analyse different text types and genres
  • learned how to communicate correctly and effectively in written English
  • improved your abilities in designing well-structured and convincing texts, in particular academic essays
  • achieved greater insights into the English language and the characteristics of different texts

Admission

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

Tutors will assume a good starting proficiency in English and pitch their teaching accordingly. Students whose first language is not Norwegian or whose English is inadequate will be at a disadvantage.

Overlapping courses

10 credits overlap with ENG0101 – The English Language. Awareness and Skills (discontinued)

Teaching

One hour lecture and two hour groupsessions per week for 14 weeks, 42 hours in all.

Attendance is obligatory 11 out of 14 seminars. Additional absences must be justified by documentation to the exam coordinator.

All participants must hand in two obligatory papers by in-term deadlines set by tutors. These papers must be approved within two weeks before the exam date in order to qualify for the exam.

Examination

The final assessment is based on a 4-hour written school exam.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Examination support material

You may use 1 English-English dictionary on the exam.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

The exam results will be found on the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.

Resit an examination

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the next two semesters that the course is taught.
