ENG2306 – Britain in the Mid-Twentieth Century (Literature and Civilization)

Course content
The course focuses on the first decades after 1945, and seeks to consider WWII and the post-war period within a broader historical framework. The period is studied on the basis of (1) poems, novels, short stories and plays by a selection of representative authors, and (2) mainly nonfiction texts which illustrate central political, social and cultural developments.
Learning outcome
The students are expected to increase their knowledge of British literature, culture and history in the relevant period.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The students must have taken at least 10 study points in literature/culture, preferably ENG1303 – British Literature / ENG1505 – British Civilisation or equivalent.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English

Teaching
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week, 28 hours in all. Half-way through the semester there is a period of one (autumn term) or two (spring term) reading weeks without teaching, to be used for individual study and work on assignments. The students are supposed to attend the course regularly
