ENG4324 – Performing Tennessee Williams
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
Tennessee Williams is one of the innovators in modern American drama and is known for plays such as A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and The Glass Menagerie. This course will explore a representative selection of Williams’s plays on the basis of the printed text and a filmatization of each play. On the basis of recent research into Williams’s plays, we will analyze how form and content in his dramas changes in the transition from a scenic to a filmatic medium and particularly with regard to the representation of gender and sexuality.
Learning outcome
Students will develop an in-depth understanding of Tennessee Williams’s plays. Further, they will develop their analytical and critical abilities with reference to drama and film and literary texts that focus on gender and sexuality.
